Celtic sack Wilfried Nancy after 33 days

Celtic are now looking for their third manager of the season.

Celtic sack Wilfried Nancy after 33 days

Celtic have sacked manager Wilfried Nancy following their Old Firm derby defeat to Rangers.

The club also confirmed that head of football operations Paul Tisdale has left his post.

Nancy leaves after just 33 days and eight games in charge, and departs with the club six points behind Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

A statement read: “Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, with immediate effect.

“The Club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Wilfried’s assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes.

“The Club can also confirm that Paul Tisdale has left his position as Head of Football Operations. We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role.

“A further update will be provided to supporters as soon as is practical.”

Nancy’s brief Celtic reign comes to an end

Nancy was appointed last month following Martin O’Neill’s successful interim spell in charge following the departure of Brendan Rodgers.

O’Neill had won seven of his eight games in charge after taking over on a temporary basis in the wake of an away defeat to Hearts that left them eight points adrift of the Tynecastle club.

Celtic erased that deficit under O’Neill, leaving Nancy, an MLS Cup winner during his previous coaching stint at Columbus Crew, with a platform with which to steer the Bhoys to the title.

Martin O'Neill had steadied the ship at Celtic

Yet he suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Hearts in his opening game in charge, which was followed by a Europa League loss to Roma, humiliation at the hands of St. Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final and another setback in the league against Dundee United at Tannadice.

Successive league wins over Livingston and Aberdeen appeared to have steadied the ship but, with a 2-0 loss at in-form Motherwell followed by a collapse against arch rivals Rangers, the Celtic hierarchy have elected to end his brief tenure.

Celtic let a 1-0 lead slip as resurgent Rangers battled back to win 3-1 at Celtic Park, prompting protests against the board after the game.

One member of that board has now gone, with Tisdale departing having been instrumental in the decision to appoint Nancy. Tisdale had been in his post since October 2024.

Celtic will now begin their search for a third permanent manager of the season, and do so with the club in desperate need of an upturn in fortunes.

Their struggles under Nancy have seen Hearts installed as the favourites to become the first team from outside the Old Firm to win the title since Aberdeen in 1985.

Celtic are also just two points above Motherwell in fourth and only four ahead of Hibernian. They host Dundee United on Saturday.

They are 24th in the Europa League table with seven points from six games and face Bologna and Utretch in their final two matches as they seek to qualify for the knockouts, with those crucial ties coming either side of another potentially pivotal meeting with Hearts.
