Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has returned to his managerial responsibilities after recovering from a recent illness, the club has now confirmed.

The Magpies boss is back taking training following a bout of pneumonia that required the former Bournemouth head coach to remain in hospital for a few days.,

Howe had been sidelined for several matches due to the illness, missing both Premier League victories against Manchester United and Crystal Palace, as well as the 4-1 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.

During his absence, assistant coaches Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones temporarily led the team from the sidelines.

A club announcement said: “Newcastle United are delighted to confirm that Eddie Howe has returned to his duties at the club’s Training Centre.

“Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery. We thank supporters for their warm wishes.”

The 46-year-old is expected to make his return to the dugout this Saturday, when Newcastle take on Ipswich at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are currently pushing for a top-four finish and the chance to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

They sit fifth in the table, holding a very slim two-point lead over sixth-placed Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s fixture is equally high-stakes for Ipswich, who could be relegated if they lose to this season’s Carabao Cup winners.

It would confirm all three teams’ spots in the Championship, with both Southampton and Leicester already relegated.
