Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season after Manchester United confirmed the defender damaged a cruciate ligament in Sunday’s home defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Argentina international was carried off on a stretcher at the weekend and, although United have not specified how long he will be out, most ACL injuries require a rehabilitation period of at least six months.

That timeframe will mean Martinez will return over the summer and should be fit for the start of next season.

A United statement read: β€œManchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace.

β€œAssessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation.

β€œEveryone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”

Martinez has been one of the few constants in a United defence that has chopped and changed all season due to form and fitness issues.

The former Ajax man had been playing well and scored the winner as United won 1-0 at Fulham on January 26.
