Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, entering into advanced negotiations with the Bundesliga club as they look to secure a marquee signing ahead of next season.
The Premier League champions have tabled an improved offer for the 22-year-old Germany international, with their latest bid understood to be in the region of £109million, including add-ons.
Wirtz has made it clear he wants to join Liverpool, which has put the Merseyside club in the driving seat for his signature.
Manchester City, who were previously interested in the midfielder, have reportedly pulled out of the race, deterred by the significant costs involved in the deal.
Bayern Munich were also thought to be keen on keeping Wirtz in Germany, but his preference for a move to Liverpool has left Arne Slot’s side as the clear frontrunners.
Wirtz, who made his debut for Leverkusen as a 17-year-old, has since become one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting talents, scoring 57 goals in 197 games for the club.

His performances have been integral to Leverkusen’s rise, including their historic Bundesliga title win in 2024.
On the international stage, Wirtz has already earned 29 caps for Germany, scoring six goals. His arrival at Anfield would bolster Liverpool’s creative options and further cement their position at the top of English football.
In addition to Wirtz, Liverpool are also believed to be ready to trigger the release clause of Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, signalling a significant summer of investment and squad strengthening for the champions.
