Liverpool are poised to trigger the β¬35million release clause of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as they seek a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season to join Real Madrid and was booed by sections of the home crowd during last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
Former Manchester City defender Frimpong has seemingly been identified as the man to fill the void, with multiple reports indicating Liverpool will trigger his release clause.
Frimpong has the ability to play as a right-back, a wing-back and on the right side of midfield and was a key part of the Leverkusen side that won the Bundesliga in 2023-24 under Xabi Alonso, who is poised to take over as Madrid coach.
He scored 14 goals and registered 12 assists in 23-24 to help Leverkusen to a Bundesliga-DFB-Pokal double in a season in which they also reached the final of the Europa League.
Leverkusen were unable to retain the Bundesliga title this season, losing out to Bayern Munich, and will end the season without a trophy, save for the DFL-Supercup they won at the start of the campaign by beating Stuttgart on penalties.
Frimpong has not been as influential this season, scoring five goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions, though those numbers are still superior to those of Alexander-Arnold, who has scored four goals and registered eight assists.
Frimpong left City’s youth setup in 2019 to join Celtic before moving to Leverkusen in 2021. After an extremely successful spell in Germany, Liverpool appear to be betting on his strong performances translating to the Premier League level.
