Matheus Cunha sent what appears likely to be a parting message to Wolves fans on Monday amid reports he is set to complete a move to Manchester United.

Wolves rounded off their Premier League campaign on Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Brentford that is expected to be Cunha’s last for the club.

Cunha was instrumental in lifting Wolves away from the relegation zone as they enjoyed a significant upturn in form following the appointment of Vitor Pereira as manager in December.

The Brazil forward scored 15 goals and provided six assists in the Premier League to help Wolves eventually finish 17 points clear of the drop zone.

That form has attracted the interest of United as they prepare for an overhaul of a squad that slumped to the club’s worst ever Premier League season, finishing 15th, only above Wolves on goal difference.

Cunha has a release clause of £62.5million and talks between him and United and are at an advanced stage, according to a BBC Sport report.

In a post on Instagram, Cunha paid tribute to Wolves, writing: “Wolves, what can I say to you?

“What an incredible season. We didn’t get to where you deserve to be, but we did everything we could to make you proud. I love these guys.

“Individually, it was the best season of my life. All of this was only possible because of all the dedication and love I have for this club. I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season, along with @roberto_firmino and @gabriel.martinelli.

“I made mistakes and got things right, but always because I lived this club so much. All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves. Another one is over.

“And thank you all for all the affection.”
