Arteta contract to be resolved ‘very shortly’, says Arsenal chief

Mikel Arteta’s new contract with Arsenal is “only a matter of time”, according to the club’s CEO Richard Garlick.

Arteta is entering the final 12 months of his deal, having last signed an extension in September 2024.

But, having guided the Gunners to the Premier League title last season, Arteta is poised to commit his long-term future to the club.

There had been some concern about the apparent lack of progress towards a new deal, but Garlick has moved to assuage those doubts.

“Mikel wants to be at Arsenal, we want Mikel at Arsenal,” Garlick said in quotes reported by the BBC and The Athletic.

“It’s only a matter of time before we put that into a new contract. Everyone is very confident and calm. We’re just navigating a transfer window and I’m sure Mikel’s contract will be resolved very shortly.”

Arteta took charge in 2019, leading Arsenal to the FA Cup in his first season at the helm.

Establishing Arsenal as a consistent Premier League contender took longer but, after three successive second-placed finishes, Arteta’s side ended a 22-year wait for a league title last season, which also saw them lose in the final of the Champions League and EFL Cup.

A dominant 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend suggested Arsenal are well-placed to defend their title, and Gunners fans will be hoping Arteta can deliver consistent silverware for years to come.

Speaking about his contract last week, Arteta said: “They [the fans] don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here, I’m extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.

“When we have the possibility, we will resolve that. That’s it.

“Everybody feels comfortable that the timing of the contract is not going to be an issue because my will certainly is to be here and I’m very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one. That’s why everyone is doing things in a very organic way.”
