Amad Diallo has promised the miserable season Manchester United have endured will not happen again following their defeat in the Europa League final.

Wednesday’s showpiece in Bilbao served as a golden opportunity for United to salvage a dismal campaign, giving them the chance to win a European trophy and qualify for the Champions League in the process.

But United produced a dreadful display at San Mames as Tottenham prevailed 1-0 through Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike to give Spurs a first trophy for 17 years.

United can finish no higher than 14th in the Premier League, but that would require victory against Champions League-chasing Aston Villa in their season finale on Sunday.

Few will expect United to prevail against Unai Emery’s men, with Ruben Amorim’s side staring down the barrel of a 16th or 17th-placed finish from the worst Premier League season in club history.

With no European football next season, United’s hopes of a turnaround in the immediate future look slim. However, following the nadir of the loss in Bilbao, Ivory Coast forward Amad made a pledge to United’s fans on social media.

He posted on X (formerly Twitter): “First of all, I would like to congratulate Tottenham on their victory, and then apologize to all Manchester fans around the world.

“It’s been an unacceptable season, and no one can deny that, but we always put our motivation on the pitch.

“I promise you that a season like this will never happen again at this great club.

“Thank you all for your support throughout the season; you’ve been by our side no matter what.”
