Real Madrid 4-0 Valencia: Mbappe and Bellingham among the goals as dominant Los Blancos extend LaLiga lead to seven points
Barcelona could close the gap to five points with a win on Sunday
Real Madrid cruised to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Valencia to extend their lead at the top of LaLiga to seven points.
Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace, while Jude Bellingham and Alvaro Carreras also scored as Los Blancos romped to an impressive win at the Bernabeu.
Valencia, who in the not-so-distant past were one of Spanish football’s big-hitters, offered very little throughout; there closest chance coming with just minutes remaining when they hit the post.
Barcelona could close the gap at the top to five points with a win over Elche on Sunday. But, for now at least, things are looking rather rosy for Xabi Alonso and his players.
Real Madrid v Valencia as it happened
It took just 16 minutes for Real to break the deadlock, Mbappe dispatching the penalty following a lengthy VAR check that adjudged there had been a handball after Eder Militao’s header from a corner.
Los Blancos doubled their lead shortly after the half-hour mark. From Arda Guler’s cross, Mbappe cleverly pulled off his defender and just about got enough on the finish to take it beyond Julen Agirrezabala for his 13th league goal of the season.
The Frenchman was eyeing up a first-half hat-trick. So it was something of a surprise to see Vinicus Jr put the ball on the spot when Real were awarded a second penalty shortly before half-time when Carreras was scythed down in the area.
However, the Brazilian winger could not convert, sending his effort straight at Agirrezabala.
It mattered little. Seconds later, Bellingham rifled in a brilliant third from the corner of the box to give Real a commanding advantage at the break.
Somewhat predictably, Real took their foot off the gas in the second-half; the game effectively over as a contest.
Hendrick was introduced for his first minutes of the season, with growing speculation over the Brazilian’s future.
But with less than 10 minutes to go, the moment of magic was reserved for Carreras, who scored the pick of the goals with a wonder strike that rifled into the top corner.
It was the young full-back’s first goal for Real and, although the visitors rattled the woodwork late on, it rounded off a comfortable evening at the Bernabeu ahead of a trip to Anfield in the Champions League next week.
