Under-21s Euro 2025: England frusrated by Netherlands in opening half of semi-final

England Under-21s endured a frustrating first half against the Netherlands, failing to find a breakthrough in the Euro semi-finals.

Despite Harvey Elliott testing Dutch keeper Robin Roefs twice inside the opening three minutes, the Young Lions were held with relative ease by their opponents.

Elliott was the most threatening player, seeing multiple efforts blocked or saved, including one from close range after good work by Jay Stansfield.

Alex Scott also came close late in the half, only to see his shot blocked in the box.

While England dominated in moments, they have been unable to translate that into goals. Omari Hutchinson looked lively on the flanks and drew multiple fouls, but the final product was often lacking.

The Netherlands offered little going forward but are doing what they need to do by remaining compact and difficult to break down.

Lee Carsley’s men will need to step it up a level if they are to book their spot in the final against either France or Germany and have a shot at retaining their European crown.
