Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands, where he is set to begin a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence linked to drug trafficking and aggravated assault charges.

The 33-year-old winger was detained in Dubai last week following an extradition request from Dutch authorities. A spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office has confirmed that Promes is now back on Dutch soil.

Promes, who has been capped 50 times by the national team, was handed a six-year prison sentence in February 2024 after being found guilty of involvement in a 2020 cocaine smuggling operation. The case revolved around over one tonne of the drug being transported from Belgium into the Netherlands.

In a separate incident, Promes was previously sentenced to 18 months behind bars for stabbing his cousin in the knee during a family dispute in 2020. Despite both convictions, he had yet to serve time until his recent extradition.

He has denied all charges and has lodged appeals against both convictions.

Promes began his professional career with FC Twente, making his senior debut in 2009. After three seasons, he moved to Russia to join Spartak Moscow, marking the first of two spells with the club.

A short stint with Spanish side Sevilla followed before Promes returned to his homeland to play for Ajax. He later re-signed with Spartak Moscow in 2021 and remained there for three years. In 2024, he made a move to Dubai United.

His international career spanned from 2014 to 2023, during which he scored seven goals in 50 appearances for the Netherlands.

Authorities have not yet confirmed where Promes will serve his sentence within the Dutch prison system.
