Isco showcased why he is a five-time Champions League winner with a first-half performance of the highest quality as Real Betis lead against Chelsea in the Conference League final.

The former Real Madrid maestro produced an assured performance in the heart of Betis’ midfield, teeing up Abde Ezzalzouli to give Manuel Pellegrini’s side the lead after nine minutes in Wroclaw.

Isco’s clever reverse pass found the Moroccan, who made no mistake by sweeping the ball beyond Filip Jorgensen and into the far corner.

The Blues eventually established something of a foothold in the game after a frenetic start to proceedings but Enzo Maresca’s men failed to carve out any clear-cut chances.

Cole Palmer poked a tame effort into the arms of Betis keeper Adrian in what was Chelsea’s best effort of the half.

But it was Betis who looked the more threatening, with Marc Bartra trying his luck from distance before Johnny Cardoso wasted a glorious chance to double the score after a cut-back from the impressive Ezzalzouli.

Chelsea were perhaps a little fortunate to be just one goal down but the Londoners have it all to do after the break if they are to turn the tide and become the first men’s club to complete the full set of European trophies.
