Kompany confirms Neuer doubt as Bayern prepare for Leipzig test

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer could be facing a spell on the sidelines due to a foot injury.

The 40-year-old missed Bayern’s 3-3 Champions League draw with Viking in midweek, and coach Vincent Kompany revealed the veteran was absent from training on Thursday as Bayern prepare to face RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

“Manu did not train yesterday. That means we have to see today how he feels and what the situation is like there,” Kompany told his pre-match press conference.

“We don’t have more information today. I don’t want to take on the role of a doctor. It’s on the foot, not on the thigh or the shoulder.

“It won’t take that long. Whether it’s tomorrow or next week, we’ll see. He should first get a better feeling and train when he can, then this phase will be over again.”

Defending Bundesliga champions Bayern are two points behind Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

An error by Neuer saw Bayern concede the fastest goal in Bundesliga history last week in a 3-3 draw at Augsburg.

Jonas Urbig played in goal against Viking, though Sven Ulreich is also an option in Neuer’s potential absence.

Despite the results against Augsburg and Viking, Kompany believes Bayern are not far from their best as they face a Leipzig side just two points behind them in the table and coming off a 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

“We want to attack,” Kompany said. “We have the feeling that there are a lot of things behind the perception of these two results. I have the feeling it is just before we show our very best version.

“In the last two matches we shot 50 times on goal. If we do a few things better then we ‌are not too far from our very best version.

“These moments that some people think might be difficult we say these ‌are the best moments you can have in your career. If you win these matches then you ‌have created some moments.

“We are sharp and motivated. We look forward to these matches to measure ourselves against the best.

“The lads reach the limit in every training session and it is fun to watch. They know it is now best ‌to talk on the pitch.”
