Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool for a fee reported to be in the region of £35million.

Warrington-born Quansah joined Liverpool’s academy aged five and progressed through the youth ranks to make his first-team debut in August 2023.

He made 58 appearances for the Reds, winning the Premier League and EFL Cup, but will now further his career in the Bundesliga under Erik ten Hag.

Another important building block for Leverkusen – Rolfes

Quansah was one of the stand-out performers as England won the European Under-21 Championship at the weekend – beating Germany 3-2 in the final – and Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes was pleased to have snared the commanding centre-half.

Rolfes said: “We are delighted to be able to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders. He is fast, agile, and a good footballer.

“He has already made an impressive impact on a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players. Jarell brings significant dynamism, pace, and toughness to our defence, and he will be another very important building block for the Werkself of the future.”

Quansah bowled over by Alonso’s Leverkusen

Quansah was impressed when Leverkusen played at Anfield last season, even though Xabi Alonso’s return to Merseyside ended in a 4-0 defeat thanks largely to a Luis Diaz hat-trick as Liverpool scored all their goals in the final half hour.

The 22-year-old said: “I was able to get a good impression of the team and the club when we met Leverkusen in the Champions League with Liverpool last season. A superb team – they played like hardly any other team at Anfield in the first 60 minutes.

“During the discussions, they explained to me exactly what ambitious goals they have here. It’s a great challenge for me to become part of Leverkusen’s current upturn.”
