Italy are looking for a win that would see them qualify for next year’s Nations League Finals. They only need to equal or better Netherlands’ result against Poland to top Group A1.

Bosnia & Herzegovina have little to play for but pride, having already been relegated to League B following Sunday’s defeat in Holland.

Both sides have been hit hard by key injuries and withdrawals, although Italy still have plenty of quality in their ranks.

Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Italy: Match preview

The final round of Nations League group games sees Bosnia & Herzegovina host Italy in Sarajevo on Tuesday night. The group’s other game, Poland v Netherlands, kicks off at the same time.

Italy picked up their second win in the group on Sunday, beating Poland 2-0 in Reggio Emilia. Having recently missed a couple of spot kicks for Chelsea, Jorginho stepped up to kick Italy the lead. Domenico Berardi doubled Italy’s lead in the final 10 minutes.

Italy are in the driving seat to top the group and reach next year’s Finals. Roberto Mancini’s side are on 9 points from 5 matches, 1 point above the Netherlands.

Italy are now unbeaten in their last 21 matches in all competitions, since a 1-0 defeat to Portugal in 2018. In that time Italy have scored 55 goals and kept 14 clean sheets. You have to go even further back – to September 2016 – to find Italy’s last defeat on home soil.

Bosnia’s form couldn’t look more different. They have failed to win any of their 7 matches in 2020, losing six of those. Bosnia’s relegation to League B was confirmed on the weekend as they lost 3-1 away to the Netherlands. Smail Prevljak scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

Bosnia did manage to hold Italy to a 1-1 draw when the sides met in Florence in September. Despite the result in the reverse fixture, all signs point to an Italy win on Tuesday.

Italy and Bosnia have faced each other four times previously. Bosnia’s lone victory over Italy came in their first ever meeting in an international friendly in Sarajevo in 1996.

Bosnia & Herzegovina team news vs Italy

Armin Hodzic started against the Netherlands on Sunday but has since tested positive for Covid-19, so Smail Prevljak is likely to lead Bosnia’s attack.

Josip Coruluka, Amar Rahmanovic, and Irfan Hadzic all won their first senior caps last week. Uncapped Freiburg forward Ermedin Demirovic has withdrawn from the squad due to injury.

Bosnia will be without captain and all-time leading goalscorer Edin Dzeko, who was one of five players who had to withdraw from the squad after testing positive for Covid-19.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and Everton’s Mo Besic did not receive call ups, while Ermin Bicakcic misses out through injury.

Veteran defender Ervin Zukanovic announced his retirement from the national team last month.

Italy team news vs Bosnia & Herzegovina

Sandro Tonali did not feature against Poland and could start in midfield.

Alessandro Bastoni, Matteo Pessina, and Davide Calabria all won their first senior cap in last week’s friendly win over Estonia.

A number of players have withdrawn from the squad due to injury or other reasons, including Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Angelo Ogbonna, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Moise Keane, Pietro Pellegri, and Ciro Immobile.

Other notable absentees from the squad include Marco Verratti, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Giacomo Bonaventura.

Sassuolo defender Gian Marco Ferrari has been called up to the squad and could win his first cap.

Andrea Belotti is the squad’s leading scorer with 9 international goals, while PSG’s Alessandro Florenzi is the most-capped player (39 caps) in a relatively inexperienced Italian squad.
