Lee Mason steps down from PMGOL in wake of critical VAR error

The 15-year veteran match official was at the helm when Brentford was gifted an equalizer against Arsenal after Mason’s massive offside blunder while at the controls during the 1-1 draw that transpired at the Emirates

Veteran match official Lee Mason has left PMGOL in the wake of his critical blunder during the 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Brentford last weekend according to breaking reports from Mail Sport.

The 51-year-old veteran had been a mainstay across the Premier League landscape while presiding over 287 fixtures in his 15-year career as a match official before his new post as a VAR official, but the severity of his mistake that cost the Gunners three points during a hotly contested title race was too damaging to not receive the harshest punishment possible, with Mason stepping down from his post by mutual consent.

In a statement from PMGOL, Mason’s contributions, and experience were honored appropriately.

“PMGOL can confirm that Video Assistant Referee Lee Mason has departed the organization by mutual consent.”

“Lee was a Premier League referee for 15 years and oversaw 287 top-flight matches during that time, with his last coming during the closing stages of the 2021-22 season. His full career in the professional game saw the 51-year-old officiate in over 500 fixtures after he progressed to the Football League in 1998.”

“We would like to thank Lee for his dedicated service to the professional game and wish him all the best for the future.”
