Wales boss Page explains hauling ‘angry’ Dan James off vs Switzerland

Wales manager Robert Page has provided an insight into his decision to haul Daniel James off versus Switzerland this afternoon, much to the frustration of the Dragons faithful.

Moore secures share of the spoils

Page and co. were of course in action a short time ago.

In the opening fixture of the weekend, Wales got their Euro 2020 campaign underway in a showdown with Switzerland in Baku.

Both sides headed into proceedings aware that a 3-point haul would place them in a strong position when it comes to booking a spot in the competition’s knockout rounds, after Italy comfortably dispatched of Turkey by three goals to nil on Friday night.

When all was said and done, however, Wales and Switzerland were forced to settle for a point apiece.

It was the latter who opened the afternoon’s scoring early in the 2nd-half, when the ever-threatening Breel Embolo nodded home Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner from the right:

Wales, though, simply refused to give in, and were eventually rewarded for their resilience with an equaliser 15 minutes from time.

Kieffer Moore was the man on target, doing superbly to direct a header into the far bottom corner of Yann Sommer’s goal:

Wales, from here, were forced to hold on, as Switzerland ramped up the pressure during the game’s dying moments.

And, despite Mario Gavranović’s late disallowed effort having left more than a few Welsh hearts in mouths, in the end, hold on is precisely what the Dragons managed.

‘Dead on his feet’

As outlined above, though, despite their side’s positive eventual result, some sections of the Wales faithful were nevertheless left disappointed with the decision-making of manager Page this afternoon.

One substitution in particular, which saw Daniel James replaced by David Brooks minutes after Moore’s equaliser, was met by particularly widespread condemnation, with the Manchester United man having looked the Dragons’ key attacking threat throughout much of the clash.

James himself, meanwhile, was also visibly upset by his exit from proceedings, with Robert Page having therefore been drawn on the situation following the full-time whistle.

The Wales boss, however, went on to reveal his happiness with James’ passion, before citing simple tiredness as the telling factor behind him being hauled off:
