Zenit Saint Petersburg vs Chelsea: Match preview

Zenit Saint Petersburg vs Chelsea betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

This season’s Champions League final is coming to Saint Petersburg but the city’s home team will not be there.

This is far from surprising and Zenit’s real achievement in these group stages is securing Europa League knockout phase football.

With Chelsea and Juventus also in Group H, it was highly unlikely that anyone else would come close to threatening the top two places.

This is exactly how it’s transpired with Zenit losing their three matches against those sides: 1-0 in London, 4-2 in Turin and 1-0 when Juve visited Russia.

But, Sergei Semak’s side have managed to see off Malmö and finish in third place.

Back on matchday two, the Sky Blues enjoyed their biggest-ever Champions League win, demolishing the Swedish champions 4-0.

Claudinho, Daler Kuzyayev, Aleksei Sutormin and Wendel all scoring.

In the reverse fixture in Sweden a fortnight ago, it was all going wrong for Zenit.

They fell behind early, then saw Artyom Dzyuba have a penalty saved before Dmitri Chistyakov was sent off for a rash challenge.

But, in stoppage time, they were given a very controversial penalty that Yaroslav Rakitskyi cooly slotted into the bottom corner.

So, Zenit St Petersburg may only have four points in the Champions League but this’ll see them through to the Europa League preliminary knockout round.

There, they will face a group runner-up in February.

The Russian side won the UEFA Cup in 2008 but their best run since came in 2014/15, losing to eventual winners Sevilla in the quarter-finals.

Also, this’ll be their first knockout stage appearance since 2018/19 having finished bottom of their Champions League group in each of the last two campaigns.

Domestically, Zenit have established themselves as Russia’s dominant club in recent seasons, winning the last three Russian Premier League titles.

On Friday night, they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Rostov at home; Claudinho scoring both, the second of which was a penalty.

So, they’re now unbeaten in six league matches following recent victories over Nizhny Novgorod and three Moscow clubs: Spartak, Dynamo and CSKA.

This leaves them two points clear of Dynamo Moskva and the top two meet on Sunday at VTB Arena.

That’s a pivotal fixture because the game is followed by a two-month winter break.

Before then, will Zenit beat the champions of Europe?

Will Chelsea wrap up top spot?

As for the visitors, they’ll be hoping to back at Krestovsky Stadium in 172 days time for the Champions League Final.

Before then, the Blues are just aiming to secure top spot in this group.

Chelsea have 12 points on the board in Group H with their only defeat coming in Turin in late-September.

In the reverse fixture a fortnight ago, the Blues inflicted Juventus’ biggest-ever European Cup defeat, a 4-0 hammering at Stamford Bridge.

The Cobham kids doing the damage, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi all scoring, before substitute Timo Wener made it four.

So, the Blues currently lead the way in Group H due to their superior head-to-head record over La Vecchia Signora.

Given that Juve host Malmö on matchday six, chances are Chelsea will need to win in Russia to hold onto first place.

Although, Thomas Tuchel’s side make the long 1,300 mile trip east following just their second Premier League defeat of the season.

On Saturday, despite leading through Thiago Silva and then Mason Mount, they were beaten 3-2 by West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy caught out by a cross-come-shot, which proved to be the winning goal, just three minutes from time.

So, despite having 33 points out of a possible 45, Tuchel’s side are now third, one point behind Liverpool and two adrift of Manchester City.

Will the European champions secure top spot in this Champions League group with a victory in Russia?

Despite that huge top of the table clash to come on Sunday, Sergei Semak is likely to put out a strong side to test his squad against one of the very best.

Mikhail Kerzhakov will continue in goal due to the fact regular number one Stanislav Kritsyuk is injured.

Semak has mainly used a back four in league matches this season but has deployed a a 3-4-2-1 in all five European matches so far.

In defence though, Dmitri Chistyakov’s red card against Malmö means he’s suspended.

So, former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren and matchday five scorer Yaroslav Rakitskyi will be joined by Danila Khotulyov at the back.

Wilmar Barrios could return in midfield, alongside Wendel, displacing Daler Kuzyaev.

In attack, they do have options but Brazilian duo Malcom and Claudinho are likely to keep their places.

They’ll be supporting target man centre-forward Artyom Dzyuba, who’s scored 105 goals in 233 appearances for Zenit.

Sardar Azmoun, Aleksandr Erokhin, Aleksey Sutormin and Andrey Mostovoy will be left in reserve.

Will Zenit Saint Petersburg claim a famous scalp?

As for the visitors, Thomas Tuchel may be tempted to rest and rotate, potentially using some big guns off the bench if required.

There could even be a change in goal with Kepa Arrizabalaga getting just his fifth appearance of the campaign.

In three of the Spaniard’s four appearances this season, he’s helped win a penalty shootout, doing so against Villarreal, Southampton and Aston Villa.

Kepa though will be needed in January/February time when usual number one Édouard Mendy is at the African Cup of Nations with Senegal.

At the back, 37 year old Thiago Silva is highly unlikely to feature.

Likewise, Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen could also sit out with captain César Azpilicueta and youngsters Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr starting.

Sarr has only played three times for the clubs since joining from Nice in 2020, twice in the Carabao Cup and in October’s win at Brentford.

At wing-back, Marcos Alonso may have to start once again due to Ben Chilwell’s knee injury.

On the other side, if James is rested and Azpilicueta is in the back three, Callum Hudson-Odoi could fill in there.

The 21 year old has, occasionally, been deployed at wing-back in 2021, including in Tuchel’s very first game against Wolves in January.

In the middle, Mateo Kovačić and N’Golo Kanté are injured so Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek aren’t likely to start either.

Thus, Ross Barkley and Saúl Ñíguez could be the midfield duo.

Since joining on loan from Atlético Madrid, the Spaniard has struggled to adapt, getting subbed off at half time in both his league appearances.

In attack, Romelu Lukaku is likely to see some minutes as he’s eased back after injury.

However, he’s unlikely to start with Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner expected to come into the XI alongside Hakim Ziyech.

Mason Mount and Kai Havertz will join Lukaku on the bench.

Will this mix-and-match Chelsea XI be too strong for Zenit?
