Match Preview for Getafe v Real Madrid
It seemed as though Real Madrid’s title challenge was hitting the buffers on Sunday when, despite a solid performance, it looked they were going to drop points at home to Athletic Bilbao.
The score was 0-0 when, in the third minute of stoppage time, the ball fell to Federico Valverde and the Uruguay midfielder smashed a rasping volley past Unai Simon to send the Santiago Bernabeu wild.

The win kept Madrid on the coat-tails of leaders Barcelona, who conjured up their own escape act to beat Celta Vigo 24 hours earlier, and staved off more misery following their Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti and his players came in for some harsh criticism after the European exit and another setback against Athletic could have meant the end of their league challenge as well.
As it is, they make the short trip to Getafe tomorrow night with at least a little momentum, although they may be playing catch-up again with Barca hosting Real Mallorca tonight.
The Catalans’ advantage stands at four points heading into the midweek fixtures with just six games remaining.
It may be the final six league games in charge for Ancelotti, who will also lead Madrid into the Copa del Rey final against Barca this weekend, with speculation gaining momentum that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season with Xabi Alonso waiting in the wings to take over.
AS reported this morning that there is an understanding in Leverkusen that Alonso will leave to take over at the Bernabeu in the summer.
A trip to the Coliseum appears the perfect game for Madrid with the mid-table hosts in no danger of relegation but out of the battle for European qualification and therefore having little to play for.
Getafe’s record at home is also poor with just one win in their last seven – albeit that was against Atletico Madrid.

Team News for Getafe v Real Madrid
Ancelotti confirmed at his pre-match press that neither Kylian Mbappe nor Ferland Mendy would be risked against Getafe and will be held back for the Copa final against Barca.
Mbappe sustained an ankle injury against Arsenal and missed the Athletic game through suspension. Mendy has been out for six weeks.
Getafe’s Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche is suspended following his red card at Espanyol on Friday night but Diego Rico will return from his own ban.
Allan Nyom is a doubt.

Prediction for Getafe v Real Madrid
Madrid’s line-up will be interesting and should offer an insight into how Ancelotti will balance the league challenge and Saturday’s big game against Barcelona.
Whatever XI he puts out, however, ought to be good enough to see off a Getafe side who may have one eye on their summer break.
Prediction: Getafe 0-2 Real Madrid
