Match Preview for Eintracht Frankfurt v Tottenham

Yet again it feels like Tottenham’s season boils down to one game. Last week’s 1-1 draw with Eintracht in North London did little to determine the winner of this Europa League quarter-final, a game that has huge implications for the club and also head coach Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian has been bullish about Spurs’ chances all season, particularly when their lengthy injury list cleared. That is now pretty much the case and he will be able to take a near full-strength squad to Germany for the return.

There were further grumblings of discontent from the Tottenham fans following Sunday’s 4-2 defeat at Wolves – their fourth loss in six league games – and they still sit 15th in the Premier League table. Several first-choice regulars were left out at Molineux but will return tomorrow night.

Eintracht have one eye on this tie but also one on trying to qualify for the Champions League via their Bundesliga position. The weekend win over Heidenheim saw them stay in third spot and offered further indication of their strength at home. Dino Toppmoller’s side have won four and drawn one of their Europa League games at Deutsche Bank Park this season.

In contrast, Spurs have lost their last four away from home in all competitions, failing to score in three.

Team News for Eintracht Frankfurt v Tottenham

Eintracht look set to be without captain and first-choice goalkeeper Kevin Trapp once again but Kaua Santos proved last week he is a more than capable deputy, a point emphasised by his brilliant injury-time save from Micky van de Ven.

Van de Ven will return to a much-changed side to the one that played Wolves. The Netherlands international will line-up alongside Cristian Romero at the heart of the Spurs defence, most likely flanked by Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie.

Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur dropped to the bench at Molineux but they will return to the starting XI, with Dejan Kulusevski also set to make his comeback from injury. Captain Son Heung-min is an injury doubt but is likely to play.

Stats for Eintracht Frankfurt v Tottenham

  • Tottenham Hotspur have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 games
  • Eintracht have scored at least one goal in every game at Deutsche Bank Park since the goalless draw with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on March 30, 2024
  • Eintracht have won their last four Europa League home games
  • Tottenham have won two of their five away games in the Europa League this season

Prediction for Eintracht Frankfurt v Tottenham

The stats don’t paint a pretty picture for Tottenham, although they will be going into the game with a full-strength back four and bolstered midfield.

Postecoglou has repeatedly said he wins trophies in his second season at clubs, and he is now coming to crunch time.

Spurs have the players but do they have the belief, or the tactical nous to get past a side that will likely sit back and utilise the pace of Hugo Ekitike on the counter?

With so much on the line, it is unlikely to be an open encounter, despite Postecoglou’s attacking nature, and we feel the Germans may just have the edge.

Prediction: Eintracht 2-1 Tottenham
