Owono ‘would never intentionally harm anyone’, says Andorra team-mate following De Miguel death

FC Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz has leapt to the defence of goalkeeper Jesus Owono following the collision that killed Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel.

Owono came racing out of his goal and clattered into De Miguel during Monday’s Segunda Division game at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz.

There was immediate concern for the 30-year-old as he lay stricken on the turf with players from both sides, including Owono who was quick to check on De Miguel after being sent-off, rushing to his aid.

He was taken to hospital but, despite positive initial updates, it was announced on Tuesday morning that he had passed away.

Owono criticism is unfair, says Spatz

Amid the grief, there has been widespread criticism of Equatorial Guinea international Owono for the reckless nature of the challenge.

But Spatz says that is unfair and revealed the 25-year-old has been “profoundly affected” by the incident.

Writing on Instagram, Argentine Spatz said: “There are moments when soccer stops making sense.

“Moments that stay with you forever and make you realise just how fragile life can be. What we experienced is something none of us will ever forget. A tragedy that has left us completely devastated, speechless, and struggling to put our sadness into words.

“First and foremost, I want to express my deepest condolences and all my love to Jesús’ family, friends, and loved ones. I also want to extend those thoughts to the entire Tenerife family and the wider soccer community. Since yesterday, everyone in the FC Andorra squad has been shocked, heartbroken, and deeply affected by what happened. It is a tragedy we never could have imagined experiencing on a soccer field.

“I also want to say a few words about my team-mate, goalkeeper, and friend, who has been profoundly affected by what happened. Those of us who know him understand the kind of person he is, how much he is suffering right now, and that he would never intentionally harm anyone.

“In soccer, freak incidents can happen, but no one could ever imagine one ending with such tragic consequences. Today, soccer doesn’t matter. All that remains is to stand together in grief, show the utmost respect, and send all our strength to the family and everyone suffering through this terrible loss. Rest in peace.”

Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter against Owono.
