AC Milan and Inter unveil 71,500-seater ‘Generali Stadium’ to replace San Siro

AC Milan and Inter have officially taken the wraps off the design for their proposed new home: the Generali Stadium.

The joint venture will see the two historic Milanese rivals swap the legendary San Siro for a modern 71,500-capacity venue.

Designed by the architects originally behind the new Wembley Stadium the ground will sit at the heart of a 281,000-square-metre urban regeneration project in the San Siro district.

Italian insurance and asset management giant Generali has secured the long-term naming rights in what the clubs described as one of the largest sponsorship deals of its kind in global sport.

The venue’s standout architectural feature is an exposed concrete X-frame supporting a double-curved roof. Inside, the design aims to replicate the ferocious atmosphere of the existing San Siro, featuring two continuous 360-degree tiers and steep stands banked at angles of up to 37 degrees to pull supporters as close to the pitch as possible.

The clubs hope the modern commercial infrastructure will finally close the financial gap on Europe’s elite.

Construction is scheduled to get under way in 2028, with the clubs targeting an official opening match in time for the 2031/32 season, subject to final planning approvals.

Italy – and the new stadium – are scheduled to host Euro 2032.
