Sevilla v Barcelona La Liga preview

Barcelona’s performance level is “verging on outrageous” and “looks like they aren’t playing against top-flight sides”, according to the head coach of their next opponents.

Luis Garcia Plaza will be the eighth manager this season to try to stop Barca winning on Saturday, when Sevilla attempt to end a perfect start to the season by the reigning Spanish champions that has included six Liga victories.

“They don’t just win – they run riot,” observed Plaza, discussing Barca’s “stratospheric numbers”. “We’re going to give them a run for their money with whatever we’ve got.

“There’s always a chance of winning. Barcelona are favourites but, with our fans, anything is possible. I’ve come up against [Pep] Guardiola’s Barca before, and against them you didn’t even get a touch of the ball.

“They create plenty of chances but we’ll stick to our style… if they beat us with ease, we’ll have to realise they’re doing something right, because we’re in good form too.

“We’d have to ask ourselves why nobody else can compete with them. If we don’t even get close to them, we’ll have to acknowledge just how outstanding that team really is.”

Sevilla’s 1-0 win at Deportivo on Wednesday was their fourth of the top-flight season, putting Los Rojiblancos fifth on 13 points before the latest round of games.

“Sevilla are a strong side at home and it is important for us to play with confidence,” said visiting manager Hansi Flick, whose side won 7-2 at home to Racing Santander on Wednesday, when Raphinha scored a hat-trick.

“When we start pressing, it is with the number nine. Raphinha has the hunger, intensity and mentality to do that. When his teammates see him doing that, they all do it.

“The job is not just about scoring goals. We are focusing on our own game. That is our job.”

Flick will see this as a chance to move further clear of the chasing pack. Second-placed Real Madrid, who are three points behind Barca, visit fourth-placed Atletico Madrid, who are two further back, on Sunday.

Betis, who are one of the other four teams within five points of Barca alongside Sevilla, visit seventh-placed Deportivo on the same day.

Lucas Stassin became the youngest Sevilla player to net on his debut after the 21-year-old striker arrived on loan from St-Etienne, but the Belgium newcomer is out with a leg inury.

“All things considered, it’s come at the best possible time,” said Plaza. “He’ll be on the verge of being fit for the Levante [away] game [next, on October 12].

“I took him off [against Deportivo] without realising anything was wrong, and then he felt it. As for the others, there’s one player who’ll either start or won’t even be on the bench.”

That individual is likely to be defender Kike Salas, who missed training on Thursday and was expected to work individually on Friday.

Arouna Sangante could start following a suspension and injury, with Plaza praising the centre-back for “a perfect job over the last few days”.

Barca goalkeeper Joan Garcia will be rested because of minor knee discomfort. Wojciech Szczesny replaced Garcia at half-time against Racing but made a comical blunder for the second goal his side conceded, losing possession while dithering on the ball near his goalline.

“Everyone makes mistakes,” said Flick, refraining from confirming whether the 36-year-old or new signing Dominik Livakovic will start.

“Tek [Szczesny] does too, and he knows that. It is important to have quality in that position. Tek knows how we want to play and understands our philosophy, whereas Livakovic has only just arrived and is still adapting.”

The certainties are that Barca will make numerous changes and defender Pau Cubarsi will start. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong
and winger Roony Bardghji have knee injuries.

• They had the fourth-worst home record and were one of five teams to finish with a negative goal difference at their own stadium in last season’s Liga, with only Celta, Oviedo and Getafe matching their total of eight defeats
