Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants the 2030 World Cup final to be held at Camp Nou rather than in Madrid or Casablanca.
The 2030 tournament will be hosted in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with games to mark the centenary of the tournament to be staged in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
But the venue for the final has still to be confirmed, with Spain and Morocco in dispute about where it should be staged.
Both countries have claimed they will host the final, with Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu likely the frontrunner for Spain, while the 115,000-seater Grand Hassan II is being built east of Casablanca. It will become the largest football stadium in the world.
However, Laporta believes Camp Nou, which is still being redeveloped, is a better option.
When work is completed, Barcelona’s iconic stadium will hold 105,000 fans, with Laporta viewing it as the ideal venue for the final.
“The World Cup final shouldn’t be in Casablanca nor Madrid, it should be at the Spotify Camp Nou,” Laporta told Cadena SER.
“I say this for a reason: 105,000 fans.
“I think that FIFA will take this into account. And besides, we already had a World Cup final at the Santiago Bernabeu in 1982.
“With all respect to Morocco, the 2030 World Cup final should be played in the Spanish state. Besides, Spain are the world champions.”
Laporta added that he will put the idea to world football’s governing body, FIFA.
“The 2030 World Cup final in the Spotify Camp Nou would mean the international recognition that we want, and we will propose it,” he explained.
“We will argue these reasons and others that we are sure will occur to us.”
