Seahawks ‘dodge bullet’ with Darnold injury update

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to miss some time with the hip injury he sustained in their season opener, but his absence is likely to only be a short one.

Darnold was injured on the opening drive of Seattle’s 13-10 win over the New England Patriots. He did not return to the game, but the Seahawks still managed to claim a narrow victory in the rematch of last season’s Super Bowl.

The 29-year-old underwent an MRI on Friday and, while that is still being reviewed by team doctors, a team source reportedly told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Darnold had “dodged a bullet”.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and ESPN added that Darnold is expected to miss next week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, but he will be back “sooner rather than later”.

Lock threw for 187 yards and a touchdown in relief of Darnold, the Seattle backup’s ability to protect the football proving decisive as the Seahawks’ defense forced counterpart Drake Maye into an error-strewn display.

Maye was intercepted three times, his third coming with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter as he was picked off in the endzone on an ill-advised third-down throw with the Patriots in position to kick a field goal and tie the game. Instead of a kick to force overtime, Josh Jobe’s interception of Maye allowed Lock to kneel out the clock and secure the win for Seattle.
