Liverpool 2-1 Atletico Madrid: Report, result and goals as Reds come from behind

Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield after Alexis Mac Allister scored shortly after half-time to complete a comeback against the Spanish side.

Marcos Llorente had given Atletico the lead in the 17th minute, but Dominik Szoboszlai levelled before the break before Mac Allister struck five minutes into the second half.

Atletico had started brightly and threatened to take control of the contest, with Julian Alvarez forcing Alisson into a strong save in the 27th minute.

The visitors had gone ahead 10 minutes earlier when Alvarez picked out Llorente’s run through the middle. The midfielder got away from Milos Kerkez before lifting a left-footed finish over the exposed Alisson and into the net.

Liverpool had struggled to create clear openings after conceding, but they found their equaliser five minutes before half-time.

Kerkez helped start the move before Bradley Barcola’s effort was saved by Jan Oblak. Liverpool recycled possession inside the Atletico area, with Ronald Araujo flicking the ball into the path of Szoboszlai.

The Hungary international took a touch before finding the bottom-left corner with a right-footed finish.

Arne Iraola’s side then made the stronger start to the second half and took the lead in the 50th minute.

Alexander Isak inadvertently helped the ball into Mac Allister’s path inside the Atletico area, with the Argentina international taking full advantage.

Mac Allister drilled a left-footed effort from the edge of the box beyond Oblak and into the bottom-left corner to score his 20th goal for Liverpool.

Alvarez came close to adding to Atletico’s threat when he received the ball near the edge of the box, but his tame effort was straight at Alisson.

Liverpool then had a chance to settle the contest when Isak shot from around 10 yards, only for substitute Robin Le Normand to throw himself in the way and block the effort.

Atletico continued to push in the closing stages, with Hancko heading over from a tight angle following a corner.

There was late drama when Oblak saved from Munoz in the 89th minute before Frimpong turned the ball home from close range, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
