Christian Gonzalez has agreed a record four-year, $135 million contract extension with the New England Patriots.
The deal includes $102 million guaranteed and makes Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, surpassing the four-year, $132 million extension Devon Witherspoon signed with the Seattle Seahawks last month.
The agreement was reached less than 48 hours before the Patriots’ regular-season opener against the Seahawks, a rematch of Super Bowl LX.
Gonzalez, 24, was selected 17th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft and has since established himself as one of the league’s leading cornerbacks.
He was eligible for a contract extension for the first time this offseason, with negotiations having remained unresolved for several months.
At the start of training camp, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the team had offered Gonzalez a deal that would make him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback.
Gonzalez had previously said he hoped to be “rewarded as a Patriot” and expressed frustration in August that an agreement had not yet been reached.
Gonzalez key to Patriots defence
Gonzalez has started all 34 of his regular-season appearances and has also started four playoff games.
He has produced some of his best performances in important games, including an interception late in the Patriots’ AFC Championship Game win over the Denver Broncos.
He also recorded four tackles and three passes defended during the Super Bowl LX defeat to Seattle.
Gonzalez missed the final 13 games of his rookie season after dislocating his right shoulder and tearing his labrum. He returned in 2024 to start 16 games before missing the regular-season finale following a concussion.
He then missed the first three games of the 2025 season while recovering from a hamstring injury.
