McTominay talks Ferguson bond, Mourinho call and heart surgery

Scott McTominay says he would consider a call from Jose Mourinho if an offer came to join Real Madrid, while sharing that he remains in touch with Sir Alex Ferguson as he prepares to undergo heart surgery.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, the Napoli midfielder opened up about the mentors who shaped his career at Manchester United.

When asked how he would respond if Mourinho – who handed him his Premier League debut at United in 2017 – called to bring him to Real Madrid, McTominay admitted:

“If that happened, I’d think about it.”

The Scotland international also confirmed he still maintains a connection with legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I last spoke to him on the phone a year ago. He’s a very busy man, but I’m sure he’d help me if I needed anything.”

Minor heart procedure ahead

McTominay is set to undergo ablation surgery to treat a benign arrhythmia and regulate his heartbeat. The procedure means the 29-year-old will miss Napoli’s high-profile encounters against Inter and Arsenal in the Champions League, although he is expected to return after the international break in late September.

Asked whether he felt concerned about the diagnosis, McTominay remained defiant:

“No, it’s a problem I have to deal with. I just found out about the operation. But we’ll see each other soon, very soon. Stronger than before.”

Big fixtures, managers and life in Naples

McTominay was quick to back Napoli ahead of their trip to Inter this weekend and says the squad are coping well with the transition from Antonio Conte to Massimiliano Allegri.

He said: “They’re different coaches. Conte was very tactically oriented, and we trained a lot. I had two wonderful years with him.

“He’s extraordinary, a serial winner. Only time will tell how things will go with the new coach, but so far he’s a good guy and has good tactical ideas.

“We just need time to implement them and play a little better.”
