Johan Manzambi scored the only goal as Aston Villa secured a well-deserved victory at Newcastle to heap more pressure on home boss Matthias Jaissle.
Newcastle fans were hoping for a response following Monday night’s 4-1 hammering at Coventry but, although their side showed plenty of aggression with a series of wild challenges, they lacked any quality in the final third.
The final whistle was met by loud boos with Jaissle already looking in danger.
The same cannot said for Unai Emery for whom it has been a good few days, this victory coming on the heels of a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce in the Champions League.
Manzambi stuns Newcastle
Nicolas Jackson had already come close before Manzambi opened the scoring, the Switzerland international pulling away from Lewis Miley and heading Joao Gomes’ cross inside Lukas Hornicek’s near post nine minutes before half-time.
The Czechia international could arguably have done better and he was scrambling around three minutes later when another nice move from Villa resulted in Emi Buendia crashing a shot off the post before Hornicek could smuggle it clear.
Newcastle offered little in response, and the home fans were starting to show their frustration. At least they could console themselves with the fact they still had 11 men on the pitch after Sven Botman survived a 19th-minute VAR check for a red card.
Botman lunged in over the ball at Jackson but his initial yellow card was allowed to stand.
Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki had little to do in the opening 45 minutes but he was called upon within five minutes of the restart, flying full length to keep out Botman’s shot on the turn.
It was Newcastle’s first effort on target but Suzuki was involved again six minutes later. The Japan international dallied too long on the ball before clearing and was clattered by Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle’s physical approach unchecked by ref Gillett
WIssa earned a yellow card as did five of his team-mates while it remained a mystery how Joelinton stayed on the pitch after barging into numerous tackles despite being shown a first-half yellow card by referee Jarred Gillett.
Emery rang the changes with a triple change with 18 minutes to go. Leon Goretzka came on for his Premier League debut alongside Ibrahima Mbaye and Ross Barkley.
And it was Barkley who almost made an instant impression with a low drive that brought a fine save from Hornicek.
Mbaye then fired over when well placed as Villa threatened a second.
It never arrived and the visitors had to endure one or two nervy moments towards the end with Wissa twice shooting wide.
The win moved Villa up to 12th, level on points with Newcastle.
