Belgium have appointed former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as their new head coach on a contract running until the end of Euro 2028.
The 49-year-old replaces Rudi Garcia, who stepped down following Belgium’s quarter-final exit to eventual world champions Spain at the 2026 World Cup.
Van Bommel will officially begin his role on August 15.
The Dutchman arrives after a successful spell at Royal Antwerp, where he guided the club to the Belgian Pro League title, Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup during his two seasons in charge.
“It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium,” Van Bommel said.
“Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best.”
Van Bommel’s experience crucial
Belgian Football Association sporting director Vincent Mannaert believes Van Bommel’s experience at the highest level will help lead the national team into its next cycle.
“Mark’s international experience as both a coach and player will help the Red Devils continue to improve, achieve results and reach their full potential,” Mannaert said.
Van Bommel’s coaching staff will include Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond.
His first matches in charge are set to come in the Nations League, with Belgium scheduled to face Italy, France and Turkey across September and October.
