Szoboszlai confident Liverpool can beat PSG team shorn of superstars like Messi, Neymar and Mbappe

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai says Paris Saint-Germain are a different proposition without superstars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar as the Reds try to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit against the Champions League holders in the quarter-finals.

PSG are considerable favourites ahead of the return at Anfield on Tuesday (20:00 BST), having breezed to a first-leg win through goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at the Parc des Princes last Wednesday.

“They have superstars and stars, but maybe not as much as when Messi or Kylian or Neymar were playing there,” suggested Szoboszlai, assessing the changes to PSG’s squad over the last five years.

“They have different types of players, a different style and a way of playing football. It’s really hard to play against them – especially when they are confident right now, leading 2-0. But we are more than ready.”

Mbappe is PSG’s all-time leading marksman but moved to Real Madrid in 2024, a year after eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi and Brazil record scorer Neymar left the club.

PSG vs Liverpool: Can Reds make Champions League comeback?

Szoboszlai says he “completely believes” his side can get through and secure a place in the semi-finals.

Liverpool were comprehensively outplayed in the French capital last week with only some wayward finishing and fine goalkeeping from Giorgi Mamardashvili keeping the scoreline respectable.

Nevertheless, Hungary midfielder Szoboszlai is confident Liverpool can spring a surprise.

He said: ”I completely believe we can overturn it because I know what we are able to do and what players we have. I know the mentality we have as we have shown it many times. That is what we need tomorrow.

“We are going to go all in and give our best from minute one to 90, or more. I am ready to die on the pitch tomorrow. I want it so bad, we have worked for it so hard. In one game anything can happen at Anfield.”

Szoboslai has been one of Liverpool’s standout players in what has been a disappointing season and he says boss Arne Slot could spring a surprise tomorrow.

“It is going to be a different game from the first leg. We are going to be doing stuff in a different way,” he added. “We need to go all in and give everything. If at the end of the game you can say you gave everything then you can keep your chin up and say we tried.

“If everybody can do what they meant to do then there is a big opportunity.”

Here are five of Liverpool’s recent comebacks in the Champions League.
