Italy stopper Donnarumma reveals tears after failing to reach World Cup again

Gianluigi Donnarumma has spoken of his heartbreak after Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, admitting he “cried because of the enormous sadness” following their play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Italy’s hopes were ended after a 1-1 draw was followed by a 4-1 loss on penalties, marking a third consecutive World Cup absence for the four-time winners.

Donnarumma, who made a series of saves to keep his side in the game, cut an emotional figure at full-time and needed to be restrained after attempting to confront opposition players.

Reflecting on the result, the Italy captain wrote: “Last night, after the match, I cried. I cried because of the disappointment of not being able to lead Italy where it deserves to be.

“I cried because of the enormous sadness I’m feeling, along with the entire Azzurri team, of which I’m proud to be captain, and I know you, fans of our national team, are feeling it too.”

Italy failed to convert key spot-kicks, with Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante both missing, while Donnarumma was unable to keep any of Bosnia’s penalties out.

Now 27, Donnarumma has still yet to appear at a World Cup and will have to wait until at least 2030 for another opportunity. He made his senior international debut at just 17 but has seen Italy fall short in qualifying campaigns ever since.

Despite the setback, he called for unity moving forward.

“It would take a lot of strength, passion, and conviction” to return Italy “back where it deserves to be”.

“Always believe; this is the driving force behind moving forward. Because life knows how to reward those who give their all, without holding back.

“And this is where we must start again. Together. Once again.”
