FA Cup round-up: Newcastle through after six-goal thriller while Burnley hit five past Millwall

This season’s FA Cup Third Round threw up all manner of intriguing contests, with many of the clubs lower down the English football pyramid going up against the country’s elite teams.

Here’s a round-up of all the 3pm kick-offs in the famous competition.

How did the Premier League sides fare?

Newcastle 3-3 Bournemouth (Newcastle win 7-6 on penalties)

While Antoine Semenyo enjoyed his start to life as a Manchester City player, his former team Bournemouth suffered Third Round heartbreak as they were knocked out on penalties by Newcastle after a six-goal thriller at St James’ Park.

After his last-gasp winner against Leeds in midweek, Harvey Barnes picked up where he left off by opening the scoring after 50 minutes.

Alex Scott and David Brooks then turned the tie on its head in six second-half minutes before Anthony Gordon netted a 95th-minute spot-kick to send the game to extra time.

Barnes again struck but it was then the turn of the Cherries to leave it late when Marcus Tavernier equalised in the 122nd minute, but it was the hosts who emerged victorious, getting the better of the visitors 7-6 in the shootout.

Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 Brentford

Brentford emerged as 2-0 winners from their trip to Championship bottom club Sheffield Wednesday courtesy of goals from Keane Lewis-Potter and a Mathias Jenson penalty.

The hosts, who are currently on minus seven points in the second-tier amid turbulent financial struggles, kept their Premier League opponents at bay until midway through the first-half when Lewis-Potter found the net.

Jenson’s penalty shortly after the hour-mark ensured safe passage to the next round for Keith Andrews’ men.

Fulham 3-1 Middlesbrough

Fulham avoided a cup shock after recovering from going a goal down in their clash with Middlesbrough at Craven Cottage.

Hayden Hackney gave the visitors the lead after 30 minutes and went into the break with the advantage, but second-half goals from Harry Wilson, Emile Smith Rowe and Kevin ensured the hosts’ name was in the hat for the next round.

Burnley 5-1 Millwall

Premier League strugglers Burnley were given a much-needed confidence boost as they hit five past Millwall at Turf Moor.

On a clinical afternoon for Scott Parker’s men, Ashley Barnes scored twice, while Loum Tchaouna, Jaidon Anthony and Jaydon Banel also found the net against the Championship playoff contenders, who snatched a consolation goal late on through Josh Coburn.

Other Third Round results

Elsewhere, Southampton were given an almighty scare by League One Doncaster after taking a 3-0 lead into half-time through Cam Bragg, Cameron Archer and Kuryu Matsuki.

Doncaster hit back after the break, with goals from Matty Pearson and Jordan Gibson before the hour making it an intriguing last period at the Eco-Power Stadium.

The Saints managed to prevent a memorable comeback to progress to the Fourth Round.

In an all-Championship affair, Lamine Cisse scored the only goal of the game as Stoke City caused something of an upset by beating runaway league leaders Coventry.

The Frenchman struck a terrific half-volley from 25 yards with just two minutes remaining in what was a thrilling encounter between the two Midlands outfits.

Ipswich Town’s record signing Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves were enough to see the Tractor Boys safely through after a 2-1 win over Blackpool.

Ashley Fletcher halved the deficit in second-half stoppage time but it proved too little, too late for the seasiders.

National League side Boreham Wood’s cup run was brought to an end in emphatic fashion by Burton Albion.

Kyran Lofthouse, a Charlie O’Connell own goal, Fabio Tavares, Dylan Williams and JJ McKiernan were the difference in a comfortable 5-0 win for the League One outfit.

Salford City’s Third Round tie at home to Swindon was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
