Algeria v Nigeria: Line-ups, stats and preview for AFCON quarter-final

Nigeria have arguably been the most impressive team so far at the Africa Cup of Nations, breezing into the last eight, winning all four games and scoring 12 goals in the process.

So you’d assume they’d be heading into tomorrow’s clash with Algeria in confident mood with minds focused fully on securing a place in the semi-finals? Not so. Nigeria, as has often been the case over the past few years, have been mired in issues away from the field with a row around bonuses prompting the players to threaten a boycott of the Algeria game.

The issue stems from the late payment of monies guaranteed for winning their group-stage games which meant the squad were considering leaving the tournament in protest.

The players have now been paid and the squad have arrived safely in Marrakech ahead of the game.

“All group-stage bonuses have been fully released and cleared required regulatory stages,” said the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite. “There will be no further administrative delays.”

Coach Eric Chelle has also had to contend with a disagreement between two of his star players – Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Osimhen made clear his irritation with Lookman for not passing to him during the 4-0 win over Mozambique on Monday, leading to an on-field confrontation that required team-mates and opposition full-back Reinildo to sort out. Osimhen indicated he wanted to come off immediately, a request duly granted, and he went straight down the tunnel at the final whistle.

The Nigeria camp claim the pair have since settled their grievances but it undoubtedly adds another unwanted problem for the beleaguered Chelle to solve.

Attempting to stop Nigeria’s potent attack is Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of France legend Zinedine.

The 27-year-old has kept a clean sheet in each of the three games he has played with his father watching on from the stands.

Team News for Algeria v Nigeria

Algeria have a doubt over midfielder Ismael Bennacer, who came off in the last eight clash with DR Congo. Jaouen Hadjam could return.

Nigeria have a fully fit squad to choose from and will likely keep the same team that hammered Mozambique.

Nigeria

Algeria are strong defensively and this could be a straight battle between their back four and the likes of Osimhen and Lookman.

We fancy Nigeria to get the job done – on the proviso their claims of team unity being restored are correct.
