Darren Fletcher takes charge of Manchester United for the first, and perhaps only, time tonight when they go to Burnley.
Fletcher has been asked to step up from Under-18s coach to oversee the first team until an interim manager is named. The intention is to then appoint a full-time successor to Ruben Amorim at the end of the season.
Amorim was dismissed on Monday after a difference of opinion with United’s director of football Jason Wilcox.
His final game in charge was Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds that left United in sixth place in the Premier League table.
It has been a turbulent period at Old Trafford but they can at least look forward with optimism.
The same cannot said for Burnley, who are heading back to the Championship unless they can string together a miraculous set of results.
The Clarets have accumulated just 12 points from 20 games and Nottingham Forest’s win at West Ham last night means they are now nine points from safety.
