Botswana 0-3 DR Congo: Report, result, goals from AFCON 2025
DR Congo will now play Algeria in the last 16
Former Chelsea winger Gael Kakuta scored twice as DR Congo cruised to a win on their way to the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Tanzania and Tunisia secured the last two available spots in the last 16 earlier on Tuesday, with Botswana consigned to elimination before kick-off.
And Kakuta – who signed for Chelsea as a teenager in 2009 but now plays in Turkey – stole the show with a goal in each half and an assist.
The 34-year-old made the opener for Nathanael Mbuku with a brilliant backheel flick and then scored from the penalty spot to put DR Congo 2-0 up.
Kakuta, who also played for Fulham and Bolton in the Premier League, sealed the win with a cool finish low into the corner of the net on the hour mark.
Kakuta was not even in DR Congo’s initial squad but was called up after an injury to Mario Stroeyken.
DR Congo finish second in Group D on seven points behind Senegal and will now play Algeria in Rabat on Tuesday, 6 January 2026.
