Man City v Brentford: Line-ups, stats and preview

Man City v Brentford preview

Manchester City and Brentford contest the first of three all-Premier League EFL Cup quarter-finals when they meet at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.

City booked their place in the last eight with a 3-1 win over Swansea, while Brentford enjoyed a far more straightforward passage, putting five unanswered goals past Grimsby Town.

The EFL Cup may not sit at the top of Manchester City’s priority list, but Pep Guardiola’s side have a proud recent history in the competition to restore.

Between 2013-14 and 2020-21, City lifted the trophy six times in eight seasons, yet they have failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals since their 2021 final win over Tottenham.

A place in the semi-finals would represent a positive omen, as City have gone on to win the competition after each of their last six successful quarter-final ties. Guardiola has already guided his side past Huddersfield and Swansea in this season’s tournament, and the hosts arrive in strong overall form, having won five consecutive matches in all competitions.

Still seeking their first major domestic honour, Brentford have now reached the EFL Cup quarter-finals for the fourth time in six seasons, though last year’s run ended at this stage against eventual winners Newcastle.

Their only previous semi-final appearance came in 2021, when they were beaten by Tottenham.

The Bees head to Manchester without a win in three matches following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, a game in which they were second best for large periods.

Their away form is also a concern, with four consecutive defeats on the road, conceding at least twice in each match. City’s 1-0 league win over Brentford in October extended their unbeaten run in this fixture to five games.

Manchester City v Brentford team news

Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku missed Sunday’s win over Crystal Palace due to a leg injury, though the severity of the issue remains unclear.

John Stones is also a doubt with a thigh problem, while Rodri and Mateo Kovacic remain sidelined with longer-term injuries.

Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri are unavailable as they prepare for Africa Cup of Nations duty. Guardiola is expected to rotate, with opportunities likely for the likes of Savinho, Oscar Bobb, Rico Lewis and James Trafford.

Brentford welcome back Kevin Schade after suspension, while Reiss Nelson could also return if he overcomes a minor knock. Josh Dasilva, Antoni Milambo and Fabio Carvalho remain out injured, while Dango Ouattara is unavailable due to international duty at AFCON.

Keith Andrews must decide whether to continue with cup goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson or revert to first-choice Caoimhin Kelleher.

Man City v Brentford Carabao Cup prediction

Manchester City

3 0

Brentford

EFL Cup success would carry greater significance for Brentford, and that may be reflected in team selection, but recent away form raises some concerns. Manchester City’s squad depth should prove too much for the Bees, and even with rotation, Guardiola’s side are expected to do enough to reach the semi-finals.
