Two sides stuck together in the Premier League standings meet on Tuesday night as Newcastle host Tottenham at St James’ Park.

Both clubs sit mid-table only separated by goal difference, though their momentum could not be more different.

Newcastle arrive buoyed by a commanding 4-1 win over Everton, while Spurs continue to drift after a 2-1 home defeat to Fulham.

The win on Merseyside snapped a six-match away drought for Eddie Howe’s side, with Malick Thiaw scoring inside one minute and later adding another.

Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade also struck before half-time, giving Newcastle the lift they needed after last week’s Champions League frustration.

What will please Howe most is the form at home. Newcastle have won six straight league matches at St James’ Park, scoring at least two goals in every one.

They also remain unbeaten in 10 consecutive midweek Premier League fixtures on their own ground. Spurs, as history repeatedly shows, rarely enjoy visiting Tyneside.

Tottenham’s struggles deepened at the weekend. Two early Fulham goals left Thomas Frank’s side stunned, and despite a fierce volley from Mohammed Kudus later on, the response wasn’t enough.

Boos rang around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a third straight defeat and a tenth home league loss of the calendar year – a mark they last reached over two decades ago.

Oddly, Spurs have been far more comfortable on their travels this season, picking up 13 of the last 18 available away points.

Even so, St James’ Park has not been kind to them. Newcastle have beaten Spurs in six of their previous seven meetings, including the last four straight, and Tottenham have not left this ground with a win since October 2021.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope missed the win over Everton with a groin issue and is unlikely to return in time. He remains sidelined along with Kieran Trippier, Yoane Wissa, Harrison Ashby and Will Osula. Sven Botman is nursing a back problem and will be assessed late.

Lewis Miley impressed with a goal and assist at the weekend and is expected to keep his place, though Howe may rotate the wide positions with Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon pushing to start.

Tottenham welcome back Cristian Romero after suspension, a badly-needed boost for a defence lacking stability.

He should come straight in for Kevin Danso. However, Spurs still travel north with a sizeable injury list: James Maddison, Radu Dragusin, Kota Takai, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke are all out.

Frank could make changes further forward, with Richarlison, Archie Gray, Joao Palhinha and Destiny Udogie all vulnerable to being dropped.
