Liverpool v Real Madrid: Trent Alexander-Arnold booed on first return to Anfield

Trent Alexander-Arnold received a rather hostile reception on his return to Anfield as Liverpool take on Real Madrid in a mouth-watering Champions League clash.

It was far from a welcome return for the former Red, who spent two decades on Merseyside and won two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown with the club, as boos rang out when the 27-year-old emerged for the warm-up.

Earlier in the day, a mural of Alexander-Arnold in the city had been vandalised, suggesting his visit to the club he left for Real in the summer after a lengthy transfer saga would not be happy one.

The England international, who will start on the bench for Los Blancos, appeared to see the funny side, smiling in reaction to his raucous reception.

Real are one of only five teams with a 100% record in this season’s Champions League so far. Under Xabi Alonso, the LaLiga giants, with 13 wins and one defeat, have enjoyed their best start to a season (after 14 games) in 64 years.

The Reds, meanwhile, have won two and lost one of their opening three European fixtures. And Arne Slot’s side will be hoping for another positive result after they ended a four-match losing streak in the English top-flight with a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.
