He can’t shoot, he doesn’t know how to kick the ball and he doesn’t score or give assists – former Italy star hammers Rafael Leao

Antonio Cassano has launched a withering attack on AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, claiming the Portugal international has “no idea about football” and his only attribute is his pace.

Leao has played a peripheral role for Milan this season, making just two substitute appearances after a month-long absence due to a calf injury.

He came on against Juventus at the weekend but missed a golden opportunity as the game finished goalless. He does not appear well suited to Max Allegri’s 3-5-2 formation which dispenses with his favoured role on the left wing.

And Cassano has become tired of a player he believes is overhyped.

The former Milan star told Viva El Futbol: “Leão does not know how to play with his back to the goal, he does not know how to protect the ball. He has no idea about soccer, he doesn’t know how to kick with either the right or the left foot. He only has speed and that is only effective when the balls is thrown forward.

“What really bothers me is that a phenomenon is created. But it’s not his fault, it’s Milan’s, who pay him €8million a year.”

Leao does score goals or give assists – Cassano

Cassano is another player who never really delivered on his talent but the ex-Italy international was quick to point out he had done more in his career than Leao when he was 26.

“Every year, at the beginning of the season, Leão always gives the same interview in which he says that this will be his year and that he will do well with the new coach,” added Cassano.

“He did it with [Paulo] Fonseca, with [Sergio] Conceiçao and now with [Max] Allegri. At the age of 26, I had already signed for Real Madrid.

“Leao doesn’t score goals or give assists, but above all, he doesn’t know how to shoot.”

Leao will take a break from his troubles in Serie A this week having been included in the Portugal squad for the World Cup qualifying doubleheader against the Republic of Ireland and Hungary. Both games will be played at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, the home of Sporting CP.
