Lille v PSG match preview
As well as winnng both of their opening matches in the Europa League, Lille may be buoyed by one of the most remarkable goalkeeper feats in footballing history when the sixth-placed side in Ligue 1 host reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
Leading through Hakon Arnar Haraldsson’s sixth-minute strike at the Stadio Olimpico, manager Bruno Genesio watched Turkiye goalkeeper Berke Ozer save three consecutive penalties as a result of a spot kick awarded to Roma in the 80th minute that was retaken twice.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen that,” said Genesio, whose side won 1-0. “It’s very strong emotions and indescribable joy for the whole group.
“Now, football is a constant challenge. Sunday will be a different match against Paris, who don’t have the same characteristics as Roma… it was a good match to gauge ourselves against the other competitors, but it’s only the story of one match.”
There was also considerable drama in PSG’s trip to Barcelona in the Champions League, the visitors recovering a deficit to win 2-1 through Goncalo Ramos’s 90th-minute winner against the La Liga leaders.
“Even if our opponents can play better than us sometimes, we also have this strength of character at all times,” said manager Luis Enrique, whose team faced their first setback of the campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Marseille on September 22.
“That’s something that’s very difficult to acquire. We don’t give up, constantly. That means we’re ready to overcome any challenge.
“Lille are one of the best teams in the league… I like going to play in these stadiums where there is a great atmosphere.”
Lille v PSG team news
Lille have been without Brazilian centre-back Alexsandro because of a quad injury, with 22-year-old Nathan Ngoy and DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba, who is nine years the Belgian’s senior, competing for a starting berth in the position.
Romain Perraud made his return from the bench against Roma following an ankle sprain. Indonesia international Calvin Verdonk has been deputising for the left-back.
Goalkeeper Marc-Aurele Caillard has missed eight matches with an elbow injury and centre-half Ousmane Toure has a serious knee injury.
Former France striker Olivier Giroud made his 900th career appearance at Roma, having scored in each of Lille’s first two Ligue 1 games of the season and headed an 80th-minute winner in their Europa League Matchday 1 victory at home to Brann.
At 35, midfielder Benjamin Andre made history in that game by breaking the record for European appearances for the club, playing in his 43rd such game.
PSG midfielder Joao Neves and forward Ousmane Dembele have hamstring injuries, while winger Desire Doue is still recovering from a calf problem and defender Marquinhos is being treated for a quad issue.
Midfielder Fabian Ruiz has muscle pain in his left leg and wideman Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia will miss out with hamstring discomfort.
Goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier spent 11 years at Lille before joining PSG for an initial fee of around £34.9 million in August, winning last season’s Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year award with his former club in 2024/25.
“The only test I see is on a sentimental level for him,” PSG manager Luis Enrique said of Chevalier.
“He’s coming back home and it’s a little unusual but, when we sign a player, it’s because we think he can be important in the long term. It’s not a test, nor an exam for him.”

Lille v PSG prediction
PSG have not suffered consecutive league away defeats since January 2023 and Lille’s patchy form does not suggest that will change here, although Genesio felt the win at Roma was reward for his players’ performances in a 3-0 defeat at Lens and 1-0 defeat home to Lyon in their last two Ligue 1 matches.
Lille scored in every home game in all competitions last season but have struggled to repeat the trick this time around, with all three of their goals across their opening two wins over Monaco and Toulouse at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy coming during second-half added time.
That said, this has the potential to be a high-scoring game between the two teams who have attempted the most shots and been on the ball the most often in Ligue 1 this season, so back PSG to repeat their 3-1 win in the fixture in 2024/25.
