Premier League spend hits £3bn in record transfer window
Record-breaking Isak deal caps crazy window
Premier League clubs spent a record £3bn this summer as deaddline day finally saw the completion of Liverpool’s £125m record signing of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
The figure, as estimated by finance company Deloitte, smashes the previous record of £2.36bn two summers ago.
Liverpool spent more than £400m in the window, a record for a Premier League club, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Isak’s former club Newcastle all breaking the £200m barrier.
Premier League clubs are in the first year of a new domestic television rights cycle, and with a record six English clubs in the Champions League this season there was more money to go around.
The figure could yet increase – as several last-minute deals have yet to be announced.
It is the 10th summer in succession the Premier League’s gross spend has reached 10 figures and the haul is more than was spent by Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1 and Serie A clubs combined.
