Farke revels in ‘magic night’ as Leeds claim late win over Everton

Daniel Farke hailed a “magic night” as Leeds United began their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Everton.

Lukas Nmecha’s 84th-minute penalty gave Leeds a deserved victory in a game in which they dominated possession in front of their home crowd at Elland Road.

With games against Arsenal and Newcastle United next up for Leeds, the three points could prove to be key for newly promoted Leeds as they bid to ensure they stay in the division.

But, in the immediate aftermath, manager Farke was predominantly interested in soaking up the celebrations and praising an impressive display from his side.

“It was a magic night. It was special,” said Farke. “We are happy and grateful for our supporters who had to suffer a lot over the years.

“It is great to see the joy and pride in their eyes and great to give the supporters who are so emotional and care so much about this amazing club. It was a top performance. We were dominant in the first half and had 12 shots.

“That’s outstanding for a newly promoted side. I was a bit worried because we were so dominant and normally you score.

“It can be costly when you don’t take your opportunities. But Lukas Nmecha took his opportunity. A hard-fought win but also a well-deserved win.”

The previous two seasons have each seen the three newly promoted teams head straight back down, and Farke knows how important a strong start could be as Leeds hope to ensure that trend is bucked in 2025-26.

“A good start is always crucial,” he added. “The first win out of the way and the first clean sheet. We have to carry on and win many more points.”
