Leeds United agree deal for Newcastle midfielder Longstaff – reports

Leeds United have agreed a deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to reports.

The Magpies were reported to have rejected three bids from Leeds for the 27-year-old, who has fallen down the pecking order at St James’ Park, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton establishing themselves as one of the best midfield trios in the Premier League.

But David Ornstein of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Leeds had struck a deal in principle to take Longstaff to Elland Road.

Leeds are reportedly set to pay a fee in excess of £12million for Longstaff, who will become their fifth signing of the transfer window following the Whites’ promotion back to the top flight. Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sebastian Bournaw and Lukas Nmecha have already been added to Leeds’ ranks.

Longstaff joined Newcastle as a nine-year-old and has made 214 professional appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals.

He made 32 appearances in all competitions in 2024-25, though just 12 of them were starts.

However, Longstaff made a crucial contribution to Newcastle’s EFL Cup triumph, scoring the winning penalty in a shootout victory over Nottingham Forest in the second round.

Longstaff was an unused substitute in the final as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 to claim their first major domestic trophy for 70 years.
