Liverpool make formal approach to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle

Liverpool have stepped up their search for a new centre-forward by approaching Newcastle for Alexander Isak.

While no official bid has yet been tabled, reports suggest that Liverpool have informed Newcastle of their interest in completing a potential deal that could be worth around £120million.

The Reds are fully aware of Newcastle’s current position that Isak is not for sale, but have made their intentions known.

The 25-year-old striker has long been on Liverpool’s radar and is viewed as an ideal fit for their attacking style.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike is also among the players the club has scouted, though no formal contact has been made between Liverpool and the Bundesliga outfit.

Interestingly, Ekitike is also being pursued by Newcastle, although the Magpies have yet to finalise an agreement with either Frankfurt or the 23-year-old Frenchman.

The tragic death of Diogo Jota earlier this month has naturally impacted the club and its transfer plans, but there remains a clear understanding that attacking reinforcements are necessary ahead of the new season.

Liverpool have already made waves in the transfer market this summer, setting a club record by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100 million, with a further £16 million potentially due in add-ons.

In the last 24 hours, the club rejected a €67.5million offer from Bayern Munich for Colombian winger Luis Diaz, who has flirted with the idea of leaving Anfield for a fresh challenge.

Isak has enjoyed a stellar spell at St James’ Park since his arrival from Real Sociedad in a deal worth approximately £60m.

The forward has scored 62 goals in 109 games for Newcastle, including an impressive 27 goals in 42 appearances last season. His form helped Eddie Howe’s side to a fifth-place Premier League finish and Champions League qualification. Isak still has three years remaining on his current deal.
