Andre Onana: Manchester United ‘could be forced to sign new goalkeeper’ after hamstring injury
Onana is set to miss the entirety of United's pre-season schedule and may not be fit for the start of the season
Andre Onana is set to miss Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the USA with a hamstring injury, opening the door for the Red Devils to sign a new goalkeeper.
Onana is set to be ruled out for between four and six weeks, with the Cameroon international in a race against time to be fit for United’s Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17.
The 29-year-0ld will join his team-mates and receieve treatment in the US but will miss the Premier League Summer Series games there against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton, as well as a friendly against Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday and the final game at home to Fiorentina.
Man Utd transfers: New goalkeeper incoming?
Back-up stoppers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton will step in for Onana during pre-season but Onana’s injury could accelerate their efforts to bring in a new goalkeeper.
The Red Devils have been linked with a new No1 to replace Onana this summer after an error-ridden two years since signing from Inter Milan.
They have been linked with Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez and John Victor of Botafogo.
But it had appeared likely Ruben Amorim would stick with Onana for another season at least after a potential sale to Monaco fell through due to the French club decided against meeting United’s £30million valuation.
Villa stopper Martinez appears to be United’s first choice if they were to replace Onana, with the Midlands club under pressure to sell a high-earning star due to UEFA’s squad cost rules.
Unai Emery’s side missed out on Champions League qualification on the final day at Old Trafford last season, which reportedly is set to lead to some departures from their squad.
