Newcastle reach agreement over £55million Elanga transfer – reports

Newcastle United have reportedly reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for the signing of winger Anthony Elanga.

The Magpies are said to have come to terms with both Forest and Elanga on a deal believed to be worth £55million and around £5m in add-ons.

Elanga will join on a five-year contract, with a medical set to take place inside the next 48 hours.

He will become Newcastle’s first signing of the transfer window for the first team. Newcastle have already completed a deal for Spanish winger Antonio Cordero, but the teenager is expected to be loaned out after joining from Malaga.

And the Sweden international addresses a position on the right wing that has long since been seen as Newcastle’s biggest problem area.

Newcastle’s long-awaited right-wing solution

Jacob Murphy enjoyed an excellent season in that spot in 2024-25 as Newcastle won the EFL Cup and finished fifth in the Premier League to secure a return to the Champions League.

Murphy scored nine goals and laid on 14 assists in all competitions, but a lack of depth on the right wing was apparent following the departure of Miguel Almiron in January.

Elanga will give Newcastle another dynamic presence on the right flank, with his pace and creativity critical to Forest’s seventh-placed finish last season.

He scored six goals and provided 11 assists in 2024-25, and the 23-year-old is said to be excited at the prospect of working with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe as he looks to continue his ascension.

Elanga to bring Sweden partnership to Tyneside

Elanga already has a strong relationship with Sweden team-mate and Newcastle talisman Alexander Isak, and Howe will be hoping that rapport can help an already potent attack become even more prolific as they prepare to compete on four fronts.

For Forest, Elanga’s departure represents a club-record sale, having signed him from Manchester United for £13.5m in 2023.

Replacing him will be a big challenge for Edu Gaspar, who was appointed as Forest’s global head of football on Monday.

Elanga’s transfer is good news for United, as they are entitled to around 15 percent of the profit from any sale of a player they signed as a 12-year-old.
