Liverpool sign Florian Wirtz in record-breaking £116m deal from Bayer Leverkusen
The German playmaker will link-up with Mohamed Salah at Anfield next season.
Liverpool have completed the signing of German international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee of £116million.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has penned a long-term contract believed to run until at least 2030, after undergoing a medical on Friday.
The agreement includes an initial £100m payment, with an additional £16 million tied to performance-related bonuses. This eclipses Liverpool’s previous transfer record set by Virgil van Dijk’s £75m move in 2018.
If all add-ons are activated, Wirtz’s arrival would also become the most expensive transfer in British football history, surpassing the £107 million Chelsea paid for Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Wirtz arrives at Anfield after an impressive stint with Leverkusen, where he scored 57 goals in 197 appearances.
He becomes Liverpool’s second major addition of the summer transfer window, following the £29.5m signing of Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Speaking about his move, Wirtz said: “Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.
“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.
“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best.
“I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”
