All eyes on Gelson Martins
The Portuguese press keep pushing this story.
A few weeks ago, Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins was named as a target for Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The 21-year-old has been attracting scouts from around Europe for several weeks, having looked impressive in the recent Champions League match against Real Madrid.
He’s a product of the Sporting academy, who broke into the first team last season, starting 13 times in all competitions.
This season Gelson has become a permanent fixture in Jorge Jesus’ starting line-up, and he’s already scored two goals and chalked up four assists.
Gelson’s contract update
Last week, Correio da Manha report that Sporting offered Gelson a new deal which the player rejected.
Sporting offered the player 250,000 euros a year in gross wages, but that’s been batted away by the player, who wants to receive at least 500,000 euros a year.
Today, Record have Gelson Martins on their splash, while they’ve claimed that FC Barcelona are now in the mix too.
The story is supported by fresh quotes from Barca director Ariedo Braida, who told Record:
What I can say is that Gelson Martins is being observed by us. This is a young man with a lot of talent that Barcelona has observed and we will continue to do so… I can not hide that Gelson Martins is a target.
