Arsenal do need a new left back
For Monaco’s Champions League win over Manchester City in midweek, plenty of people noticed that Gilles Grimandi, the former Arsenal player and current scout, was present.
Unlikely to be studying any of Man City’s players, most assumed Grimandi was the UCL game to cast his eye over the many talented stars in the Monaco side.
The Ligue 1 leaders are packed with stars of the next generation, but who were the Gunners looking at specifically?
So many Monaco players to choose from…
Due to the uncertainty surrounding Arsene Wenger, there were even suggestions that Grimandi came to watch Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim.
With so many Monaco players to choose from, there were even claims that Gilles Grimandi was at the Monaco game rumoured to be keeping an eye on Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoué Bakayoko.
However, L’Equipe have ruled all of them out, at least in the short term. The reliable French newspaper claim Arsenal were watching Monaco’s powerful left back Benjamin Mendy.
Arsenal’s first summer signing?
Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs have been amongst Arsenal’s worst players this season, so a move for a left back in the summer seems inevitable, whatever happens to Arsene Wenger.
Benjamin Mendy is contracted to Monaco until the end of the 2020/2021 season but L’Equipe report that Arsenal have the upper hand in this particular race.
And, the French newspaper claim Mendy could be Arsenal’s first summer signing.
